The Alaskan gold rush drew thousands of adventurers to Alaska in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. Most think of Nome, Fairbanks, and Iditarod country as Alaska’s gold rush frontier. Gold was actually discovered closer to Anchorage before that! Gold fever took hold and prospectors scoured the Susitna and Matanuska river basins. They found what they were after in the Talkeetna Mountains.
A multi-day vacation package from Alaska Adventure Unlimited will help you to experience some of what those days must have been like!
Most of our multi-day Alaska vacations include a trip to Hatcher Pass, in the Talkeetna Mountains and Independence Gold Mine, built in the early 1900’s. It is now part of the Independence Mine State Historical Park.
Independence Mine State Historical Park offers lots of paved paths or mountain trails to explore – it all depends on how much adventure you’re after. The area is rich in scenery, plants, and animals, making it a great place for a photo-safari.
Want to know more about the mine’s history? A park naturalist will be on hand to tell you about the history of the Independence Gold Mine and the people who worked it. They’ll also be happy to field questions on the area’s beautiful flora and fauna.
Best of all – you can pan for gold in a stream just below the Independence Gold Mine!
This is real Alaska gold panning, too. There’s no guarantee that you’ll find gold when you pan – but you could, too! Many do. This natural, gold-bearing stream has not been “salted” with a few nuggets to excite the tourists. Any gold you find is there of its own accord – and yours to keep! Now THAT is fun!
When you book a trip with Alaska Adventure Unlimited, you’re scheduling the trip of your lifetime. We take you off the beaten path to places that very few other tour companies even bother with. Adventure is our middle name!
