Go With The Flow – Alaska Whitewater Rafting!

July 29th, 2016 by Corey A. Edwards

Go With The Flow - Alaska Whitewater Rafting!Looking for some thrills and adventure during your Alaska getaway and not afraid of getting a little wet? Then Alaska whitewater rafting is for you!

Alaska whitewater rafting on Matanuska River – the Lion’s Head – is a thrilling raft trip that is popular with first-timers and experienced rafters alike. The Lion’s Head raft trip includes a few miles of class III and IV whitewater as well as long stretches of intermittent class II and III rapids.

This means fun, splashy rapids and the big, smooth-rolling open vistas that are unique to Alaskan rivers. A great mix!

Located 2 hours north of Anchorage, this raft trip travels parallel to the Matanuska Glacier. The run gets its name from a massive basalt rock wall, “Lion’s Head,” that serves to help squeeze the river up against the glacial moraine to form the popular class IV rapids.

Depending on the water level of the river, you’ll either paddle as a group or hold on while the guide does the work. Outfitted in full dry suits and dry shoes over your clothing, you’ll stay dry and happy during the 3 ½ hour trip.

During the latter, slower half of the run, be sure to keep a look out for Dall sheep. Dall sheep raise their young around Lion’s Head. If you do see some, there’s a good chance you might see some grizzly or black bears as well!

If an Alaska whitewater rafting trip is not for you, worry not! We also offer the Glacier Run scenic glacier float trip.

The calmer, smoother Glacier Run float trip is a scenic, class II river rafting adventure that is perfect for sightseeing and photo opportunities. You’ll drift leisurely along Matanuska Glacier for 2 ½ hours, soaking up all you see but warm an dry in your rain jackets, overall pants, and tall boots that we’ve provided.

Have group members who want to raft but you’d just rather … not? Again, no problem!

Sit out the time in comfort at Long Rifle Lodge. Here you can take in breath-taking views of the Matanuska Glacier without all the splashing and rocking. Further, you can do so while enjoying hot beverages and snacks from the Long Rifle Lodge’s rustic, museum-like cafe!
