The Iditarod is Alaska’s annual, 1000 mile long, dog sled race. This iconic yearly event conjures up romantic visions of hardship, endurance, and heroic men and dogs. Even in the beginning, when it was simply for supplies and mail, the journey was worthy of respect and awe.

Having an actual Alaska dog sledding adventure is something many dream of and few experience. With Alaska Adventure Unlimited’s vacation packages, however, the opportunities are many!

Virtually all of Alaska Adventure Unlimited’s multi-day tours include a stop off in Talkeetna, the home of the Iditarod!

Here you’ll visit Iditarod Race Headquarters and meet a real Iditarod musher and his dog team! You’ll pet Husky puppies and enjoy a film on the life of a musher. Best of all, you get to ride in a dog sled behind a team of huskies! Because there will be snow to run on this time of year, you’ll enjoy a ride around a quarter acre track in a summer dog sled buggy used to train the dogs off-season.

Another way to experience the thrill of Alaska dog sledding is with an accomplished team of mushers who are veterans of both the Iditarod and the Yukon Quest.

On this trip, you’ll hear the exciting story of Alaska and the history of the Iditarod with the Husky as the focus. You’ll learn how to train and care for these amazing dogs is demonstrated. You’ll also learn Iditarod race strategies and how the race has changed over the years. Finally, you’ll experience the rush and power of 18 Alaskan Huskies as they haul you over bridges and down a wooded trail in a summer training buggy. The whole experience ends with taking cute and tumbly Husky puppies for a short hike – what fun!
